Gate Openers & Operators

The operator is the gate's heart: match it to the gate's weight, the site's power and the traffic it will see, and it disappears into reliability. Mismatch it and you'll learn its brand name by memory.

The Spec Beyond the Motor

  • Duty rating: residential, medium, or continuous commercial — set by real traffic counts, with headroom for busy days.
  • Power: hardwired where it's close, solar where trenching costs more than panels, battery backup either way if being locked out during outages is unacceptable.
  • Safety stack: photo eyes, sensing edges where geometry demands, exit and safety loops — installed, monitored and tested, per UL 325.
  • Controls: whatever should command the gate — remotes, keypad, phone entry, app, fire-department access — planned as inputs from day one. Details on the access control page.
  • Manual release: known, accessible and demonstrated — the feature nobody values until the first outage.

Repair Reality

Operator repairs we run weekly: control boards and surge casualties, drive gears and chains, limit switches, receivers, loop detectors, and the eternal batteries. Brands vary across the valley's installations — LiftMaster's commercial gate line and other major operator makes included — and our diagnosis-first approach applies regardless of the badge on the cabinet.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a gate operator sized?

Three numbers: gate weight, gate length, and cycles per day. Every operator publishes limits for all three; running near or past any of them shortens its life dramatically. Residential single-family traffic is easy; HOA entrances doing hundreds of cycles daily need commercial-duty machines and get them in our quotes — under-spec'ing an entrance operator is the most common existing-installation sin we correct.

Is solar power practical for gate openers?

In Las Vegas? It's practically cheating — this is one of the best solar climates on earth. Solar gate systems pair a panel with a battery that runs low-voltage operators, eliminating trenching costs to remote gates. Honest limits: high-traffic gates outrun modest solar arrays, and batteries remain heat-sensitive consumables. For a typical residential drive gate far from power, solar is often the clear winner.

What safety devices are required on an automated gate?

UL 325 requires entrapment protection appropriate to the installation — in practice: photo eyes across the opening, sensing edges where the gate could trap against something, proper operator entrapment sensing, and vehicle-detection loops for free exit and over-gate safety at driveways. We treat these as non-negotiable parts of every install, and restoring bypassed devices is a repair we perform constantly.

Why do gate operator batteries keep dying here?

Heat. Sealed batteries that last 4–5 years in mild climates often give 2–3 in a Las Vegas operator cabinet that hits oven temperatures all summer. Shaded/ventilated mounting helps; scheduled replacement helps more. If your gate dies in every power outage, the battery already told you.
