Retrofit honesty

Stick-on insulation kits for existing doors add some comfort, and we won't pretend otherwise — but they add weight the springs weren't sized for. If you've added insulation panels to your door, have the spring balance checked; an out-of-balance door quietly destroys openers. And when the door's due for replacement anyway, a factory sandwich door beats any retrofit by a mile.

Polystyrene or polyurethane — what's the difference?

Polystyrene is rigid foam board fitted between the skins — good, economical insulation. Polyurethane is foamed in place, bonding to both skins — roughly double the insulating value per inch, and it turns the panel into a stiff, quiet composite. Our shorthand: polystyrene for solid value, polyurethane when comfort, quiet or a bedroom over the garage is in play.

What R-value do I actually need?

Honest answer: the marketing war over R-18 vs R-16 matters less than getting from R-0 to something real. For a Las Vegas attached garage used for parking and storage, mid-single-digit to low-double-digit R-value transforms comfort; for workshops, gyms or rooms above, buy toward the top of the range and mind the perimeter seals too. Note that a door's advertised R-value describes the panel center, not the assembled door — every brand plays this game, so compare construction, not just the number.

Will an insulated door lower my energy bill?

If the garage is attached — sharing walls or ceiling with conditioned rooms — yes, by moderating the thermal buffer zone your AC fights against; bedrooms over garages feel it most. On a detached, unconditioned garage the payoff is comfort and equipment protection more than utility savings. We'd rather tell you that plainly than promise magic percentages.

Are insulated doors quieter?

Noticeably. The foam core damps panel vibration (that hollow single-skin boom disappears), and sandwich doors run stiffer and truer in the tracks. Pair one with sealed nylon rollers and a belt-drive opener and the door becomes something you simply don't hear from inside.
