- The desert can't do much to it. No warping, no cracking, no termites, and very little rust in our humidity. The sun's main victim is the finish — solved by factory-baked polyester and PVDF coatings that shrug off UV for years.
- Every style exists in steel. Raised panel, flush modern, carriage-house with hardware, glass-banded contemporary, woodgrain finishes — the catalog is enormous, which is why matching an HOA-approved look is easiest in steel.
- It's the value benchmark. For equivalent size and insulation, steel is consistently the least expensive quality option — which frees budget for high-cycle springs, sealed rollers and a better opener.

- Push on gauge and construction, not just price. Two quotes for "a 16×7 steel door" can describe wildly different products. Ask: what gauge? how many layers? what core?
- Struts matter on doubles. Wide single-layer doors need reinforcing struts to survive opener cycling — if a cheap quote omits them, the door will remember.
- Pick color with the sun in mind. Dark modern colors look sharp but run hot and fade faster on west exposures; factory finishes fade slower than field paint, always.

Gauge measures steel skin thickness — and counterintuitively, lower numbers are thicker. 24-gauge is a sturdy premium skin; 25–26 is the solid mainstream; 27–28 marks the thin end where dents come easy. On a budget, a 25–26 gauge door with a foam core often out-performs a thicker single-skin door, because the sandwich construction adds stiffness the skin alone can't.
Will a steel door rust in Las Vegas?
Our dry climate is about as kind to steel as anywhere in America — rust here usually starts where paint is scratched deep or at the bottom edge where irrigation overspray hits. Galvanized steel with baked-on finishes handles the desert well; just touch up deep chips and keep sprinklers off the door.
Do steel doors get hot enough to matter?
The skin absolutely does — a west-facing steel door can be painful to touch on a July afternoon, and a single-layer door radiates that heat straight into the garage. If the garage is attached or used for anything but parking, insulated construction pays for itself in comfort. Lighter colors also run measurably cooler than dark ones.
Can steel doors look like wood?
