- Don't press the opener button again. The opener will happily fold your door in half trying to force it.
- Don't pull the red release cord if the door is partway up — a door hanging off-track may fall when disconnected from the opener.
- Keep the area clear — no cars underneath, no kids "helping."
Why Doors Jump the Track
Rollers don't leave a properly aligned track on their own. Something changes the geometry first:
- Impact. The most common cause in our service logs: a bumper tap on the way out. The door looks fine until the bent bottom section reaches the track curve.
- Cable failure. When one lift cable snaps or unwinds from its drum, that side of the door drops and twists — and rollers pop out under the sideways load. This is why we always inspect cables on off-track calls.
- Worn rollers. A cracked nylon roller or a seized steel one climbs the track wall instead of rolling, then jumps out at the curve.
- Loose or spread track. Track brackets loosen over thousands of cycles; the gap between tracks widens until rollers barely engage.
How We Fix It
- Secure the door
The door is clamped and supported so nothing moves while we work — this step is exactly why off-track repair isn't a DIY job.
- Find the cause
Bent section? Snapped cable? Failed roller? Fixing the derailment without fixing the cause is a repeat visit waiting to happen.
- Repair the path
Track is straightened or replaced, brackets re-anchored, spacing gauged against the door — then rollers (new ones if worn) are seated back in the rails.
- Rebalance and verify
Cables re-tensioned, door balance tested, opener force limits reset, and full open/close cycles run with the safety reverse tested.
After any impact — even a small one
If a car touched the door, have it inspected before further use even if it "seems fine." A slightly creased section concentrates stress every cycle, and the failure usually happens weeks later, mid-travel, when it's a much bigger job.

Can I push the rollers back into the track myself?
Please don't. The door's weight is partially unsupported when rollers leave the track, and freeing a jammed section can release it suddenly. Re-tracking is done with the door supported, cables checked and tension controlled — this is a two-hands-plus-training job.
Why did my door come off track?
The usual suspects: a car bumping the door (even gently), a snapped or slack lift cable letting one side drop, worn rollers finally cracking, an obstruction in the track, or misaligned track brackets loosening over years of vibration. Part of our repair is identifying which one, so it doesn't repeat.
Is an off-track door dangerous?
Yes — it's the failure mode we treat most carefully. The door can be partially suspended on a few rollers and one cable, and it can shift or fall if bumped. Keep children, pets and cars away from it and don't operate the opener.
Will the track need to be replaced?
Often not. Mildly bent vertical track can frequently be straightened and re-secured; crushed, kinked or torn track gets replaced. We carry standard residential track sections and will show you the damage before recommending either.
